Lake Dunmore is a beautiful glacial lake that is located about 10 miles south of Middlebury and 10 miles North of Brandon Village. It lies in the small towns of Salisbury and Leicester. The lake is 7 miles long from the northern tip to the southern tip, 3 miles wide and over 100’ deep in spots. It is an unmatched four season recreation resource and a photographers delight. The lake runs along the spine of the Green Mountains providing hikers and mountain bikers access to a vast network of trails from easy to expert. The fishing in the lake includes bass, trout, salmon, pike, perch and smelt. Ice Fishing is also a favorite on the lake, dotting the lake with shanties from December to spring. Boating activity on the lake includes serious water skiers (with a slalom course), party boaters to kayaks and canoes. The lake is home to the Middlebury College Crew Team and Sailing Club. Both can be seen practicing their sports in the fall and spring semesters. Pontoon boats are becoming more prevalent each year and there is an active group of lake dwellers that have “raft up” potlucks once a week over the summer through foliage season.
The lake has a lot of history attached to it and many of the cottages on the lake have passed from one generation to another. Each year more camps are renovated into year round dwellings or torn down and replaced. There is a state owned boat launch on the Eastern side of the lake next to the Water Houses marina and Branbury State Park on the Western portion of the lake.
Just South of Lake Dunmore is the smaller Fern Lake separated by a thin isthmus. Fern is a quieter lake often compared to Golden Pond, with the predominant activities on the lake being swimming and paddling. Motorboats are allowed but infrequent, as there is a no wake rule in effect on the lake. There are fewer year round homes on this lake.
